New Environment Minister

Keep Wales Tidy wishes a warm welcome to John Griffiths AM, the newly appointed Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development. We look forward to working with the Minister in our continued effort to look after Wales's landscape and improving the quality of people’s lives. For more information about the Minister, click here.

Climate Change Challenge

Keep Wales Tidy is now managing the Welsh Government's Climate Change Challenge and will also be supervising the Climate Change Champions.

A Climate Change Champion spreads the word about how people can take simple steps to reduce their carbon footprints. They use their influence to persuade friends, families and the wider community to do their bit to tackle climate change.

We will also continue to support three community centres across Wales in their bid to become more environmentally friendly.

Watch this space for more information on how we can work together to look after our planet.

Wild weekend

Over 85 groups from across Wales have been successful in applying for free B&Q vouchers as part of Keep Wales Tidy’s ‘Have a Wild Weekend for Wales’ campaign. They will soon be rushing to their nearest B&Q store to spend the vouchers on the plants, tools and wood that they need to carry out small environmental projects that will improve local biodiversity and benefit native plant and animal species. In total, we have given out £15,000 worth of vouchers.

Just how clean are our streets?

For the third year in a row an extensive survey of litter on Wales’s streets, undertaken by specialist staff from Keep Wales Tidy, shows that the nation’s streets are generally getting cleaner and that the gap between the better and worst performing councils is getting smaller.

The All Wales Local Environment Audit Management System Report (How Clean are our Streets?) shows that initiatives undertaken by Keep Wales Tidy and local councils are beginning to have the desired results with the percentage of sites affected by graffiti showing a significant reduction down from 12.2% to 4.1% and a downward trend in the presence of dog fouling.

Street Scene Indicator

Keep Wales Tidy are working with Barry College as a part of the knowledge transfer partnership to develop a new street scene indicator for Wales. The aim of the project is to produce a new methodology that will incorporate how the public perceive the cleanliness of a street with what is found on the street. The new methodology will include every indicator in the score and will give each one a weighting in relation to how much of an issue the public perceive it to be, for example dog fouling will have a higher weighting than weeds . The weighting has been taken from a piece of work carried out by Beaufort Research on our behalf that looked into the public’s perceptions and behaviours with regards to litter and littering.

Don't throw them away!
