Over the past decade significant investment has been made to improve the quality of the water that flows through the rivers of Wales. This has resulted in the return of otters, and rivers that are teeming with fish such as salmon and the native brown trout.
Unfortunately, littering and fly tipping continues to be a problem. Litter not only looks unpleasant, but creates many problems for the riverine environment, such as harming local wildlife, flood hazards and water pollution.
To create rivers that are loved and looked after, environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy is launching the ‘Three Rivers Challenge’
Funded by Environment Wales, the aim is to get community groups, businesses and volunteers to help clean-up three large rivers in Wales over three consecutive weekends in September as part of ‘Tidy Wales Week’.
The first river to be tackled is the River Ebbw and the ‘Great Ebbw Challenge’, will take place from the 16-18 September 2011. The following weekend, 23-25 September 2011 it is the turn of the River Teifi with the 'Great Teifi Challenge' and finally it is the turn of the River Ogmore on when the 'Great Ogmore Challenge' will take place between 30 September - 2 Oct 2011
The search is now on for volunteers to roll up their sleeves and do their bit and help clean the Rivers Ebbw, Teifi and Ogmore.
