Help for a hundred!

A charity from Bridgend has become the hundredth group to benefit from Keep Wales Tidy’s free insurance scheme. BAD Bikes provides advice and assistance for young people in the Blackmill area and organises educational activities such as litter picking which aims to improve the lives of those who live there.

Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Local Environmental Quality department, any community group who are undertaking practical environmental projects as part of the Tidy Towns project have been encouraged to apply for FREE insurance cover.

The project is also able to offer financial assistance to groups who have demonstrated a commitment to restoring their communities to their former glory. Support and practical assistance is available from Tidy Towns Officers who are on hand across Wales to offer help and advice on forming groups, holding events and applying for grants.

BAD Boys offers a programme of activities and training based around the mountain bike theme, in addition to developing aspects of the local environment to increase accessiblity for cycling. The group aims to develop young people’s self-confidence and sense of responsibility through projects like litter picks, clearing pathways and the development of community spaces.

Project coordinator, Andy McKay, commented:

"It’s great to hear that we are the 100th insurance customer; that in itself is so special. It’s even better when you consider the economic climate that we are in: free insurance will allow us to use the money we have saved to improve our community. Big thanks to Keep Wales Tidy!"

Funding is still available. For more information on the Tidy Towns insurance and small grants scheme or to get contact details of your local project officer please contact Tidy Towns on 029 2072 6994 or email tidy.towns@keepwalestidy.org or visit www.keepwalestidy.org
